Japan accomplished remarkable economic growth from the mid-50's to the early 70's, but the price was heavy pollution of air and water in Japan. In order to resolve the pollution problem, Japan has gone to a great deal of effort to achieve the most advanced pollution control measures, with the constant endeavour of local communities and the cooperation of academia, industry and government.
However, in the 21st century we face the new threat of global warming, a problem for which we must take worldwide measures. Moreover, there are a lot of environmental problems that cannot be limited to one area and generation, such as maintenance of harmful chemicals, waste disposal and recycling of resources. In order to resolve these problems, it is necessary to reconsider our way of life and business, and change our society into an environmentally sustainable one.
The Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency (ERCA) was established in April, 2004. In order to aid the conservation of the environment both domestically and internationally, the ERCA has implemented compensation and prevention programs for the health damage caused by public pollution, promoted and supported the activities by local governments and private organizations, provided training programs and information, supported and facilitated polychlorinated biphenyl waste disposal, and managed funds for the administration and maintenance of final waste disposal sites. In addition, we have been providing medical expenses, etc. since March 2006 for the purpose of supplying prompt relief to sufferers of asbestos-related illnesses and their bereaved families.
We will endeavor to create and conserve a healthy environment through these activities, which will help to promote the health and culture of our society in the future.
Thereby, we seek to assume the responsibility for the implementation of the government environmental policies and to contribute to human welfare. We appreciate your cooperation and support in our activities. |
