Research Fields
The ERTDF covers the 5 research fields described in the “Promotion Strategy for the Environmental Research and Environmental Technology Development” decided by the Minister of the Environment in August, 2024.
This strategy identifies 16 prioritized issues which should be addressed over the next five years based on the medium- and long- term social goals.
The ERTDF promotes many research and development programs proposed by industry, government and academia to contribute to solve the 16 prioritized issues.
Cross-sectional Field
- 1.Presentation and realization of visions and philosophies to achieve a sustainable society.
- 2.Integrated improvement of the environment, economy, and society.
- 3.Integrated realization of net zero, circular economy and nature positive.
- 4.Contribution to environmental problems caused by disasters or accidents.
- 5.Solving of global issues and strengthening international cooperation and competitiveness.
Climate Change Field
- 6.Research and technical development of mitigation measures for climate change.
- 7.Research and technical development toward adaptation to climate change.
- 8.Clarification, forecasting and assessment of measures in response to global warming phenomena.
Sound Material-cycle Field
- 9.Research and technical development on establishment of waste treatment systems contributing to create regional circular and ecological sphere.
- 10.Research and technical development on thorough resource circulation throughout its life cycle.
- 11.Research and technical development on securing appropriate sustainable waste disposal treatment adopting the changes of social structure.
Harmony with Nature Field
- 12.Research for the enhancement of scientific knowledge that contributes to conservation of biodiversity and technological development of countermeasures.
- 13.Research and technical development for sustainable use of ecosystem services and elucidation of ecosystems.
Safe and Secure Field
- 14.Research for promoting inclusive risk evaluation and management of chemical substances.
- 15.Research to advance, assess and clarify countermeasure techniques for managing and improving environments of air.
- 16.Research to advance, assess and clarify countermeasure techniques for managing and improving environments of water and soil.
Strategic Research Project (I)
A large-scale research and development project that should receive particular focus or is expected to produce pioneering results.Call for research topics that constitute the strategic research theme will be made by the Ministry of the Environment.The research period is within 5 years.
Strategic Research Project (Ⅱ)
A medium-scale research project that should focus on efforts in a short period of time.Call for research topics that constitute the strategic research theme will be made by the Ministry of the Environment.The research period is within 3 years.
