Research and Development Overview

With the aim of expanding the application of recycled polypropylene (PP) to automotive parts and based on evaluation results obtained in the previous fiscal year, we will promote research and development related to advanced material design, verification of durability improvement measures, and application studies toward practical applications. Specifically, we will proceed with confirming the effect of stabilizers on recycled PP and establishing evaluation systems, while continuing to understand the lifespan and durability of recycled PP.

Furthermore, for prime polymers, we will proceed with establishing formulation proposals that consider manufacturing costs and implement material design that reflects the requirements of automobile manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers.

In addition, Mitsui Chemicals and the Mitsui Chemicals Analysis Center will conduct heat resistance, light resistance, and weather resistance tests, as well as various physical property evaluations, on recycled materials and recycled PP compounds with additives to verify the performance improvement effect of additives. Furthermore, we will proceed with understanding the factors that affect material properties through analysis of recovered recycled materials and compounds, structural and compositional evaluation at the resin-dissimilar material interface, affinity and miscibility evaluation with dissimilar materials, and measurement of fine particle crushing force.

In addition, we will work on collaborative themes such as establishing methods for removing and analyzing foreign matter, removing and analyzing odors, and conducting chemical substance and safety surveys, thereby promoting the construction of a comprehensive technological foundation necessary for the development of recycled PP for automotive applications.
